FAQ: Electric Outboard Motors — Everything You Need to Know

Frequently asked questions about Momentum electric outboard motors: power, battery life, costs, saltwater reliability, marine protected areas and where to buy.

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about Momentum electric outboard motors for boats, tenders and sailboats. Whether you’re considering switching from petrol to electric or want to understand our product range, this FAQ covers everything you need to know.

What is a Momentum electric outboard motor?

Momentum electric outboard motors are 100% electric propulsion systems designed for tenders, RIBs, sailboats and small workboats. The range includes two models: the U2 (2.5 kW / €2,990 ex VAT) and the M10 (10 kW / €9,000 ex VAT). Both models deliver instant torque, silent operation and zero emissions.

How powerful are Momentum electric motors compared to petrol?

The Momentum U2 at 2.5 kW delivers 3.35 HP, with an approximate felt performance of 5 HP thanks to instant electric torque. The M10 at 10 kW delivers performance comparable to a 20 HP petrol outboard for tenders up to 4.5m. Electric motors deliver full torque instantly, so real-world performance often exceeds what the HP figure suggests.

How long does the battery last on a single charge?

Battery life depends on the model and speed. The U2 offers up to 2 hours at cruising speed. The M10 with its MB-6 battery reaches up to 12 hours at cruising speed. At low speed for harbour manoeuvres, runtime increases significantly. Charging takes 2 hours for the U2 and 4 hours 30 minutes for the MB-6 on a standard 220V outlet.

Are electric outboard motors reliable in saltwater?

Yes. All Momentum motors are engineered for the marine environment, including saltwater. Components are corrosion-resistant, and the sealed electric drivetrain has far fewer failure points than a combustion engine. With no oil, no spark plugs and no carburettor, reliability is inherently higher.

How much does it cost to run an electric outboard?

Running costs are dramatically lower than petrol. Electricity costs approximately €0.02 per kilometre versus €0.15–0.30 per km for petrol. Annual maintenance is near zero — no oil changes, no filters, no winterisation. Over 5 years, a Momentum owner saves €3,000–5,000 compared to an equivalent petrol engine.

Can I use a Momentum motor in marine protected areas?

Absolutely. Momentum motors produce zero emissions, zero noise pollution and zero water contamination. They comply with all current and foreseeable environmental regulations across European waters, including strict Mediterranean marine protected areas where combustion engines are increasingly restricted or banned.

Where can I buy a Momentum electric outboard motor?
